Burgess, who suffered the injury in Saturday night's 36-24 loss to the Bulldogs, had an MRI scan on Sunday which were unable to fully determine the extent of the damage.
Initial fears indicated Burgess had suffered a syndesmosis injury which would require surgery and a four month stint on the sidelines.
In a release, the Rabbitohs said Burgess will now need an arthroscope on the ankle to tidy the area up enough to establish whether his season is over.
"Sam will miss at least six weeks of football following the arthroscope and this time period will be revised once the total damage to his ankle has been determined," the club said.

With the Panthers sitting 14th on the ladder after just two wins from seven matches, Elliott was informed of the decision by Panthers chairman Don Feltis and chief executive Michael Leary on Tuesday.
Chief executive Leary told ABC Grandstand Elliot was naturally disappointed but reacted professionally.
He expects the Panthers players to do the same.
"I don't [expect the players to be affected by the decision] - we've got a professional coach, we've got a professional staff and we've got professional players and they're all paid to do their job and I'm very confident that they will," he said.
Former St George Illawarra coach Nathan Brown - currently in charge of Super League leaders Huddersfield in England - has previously been linked with the job, while the likes of Origin coaches Ricky Stuart and Mal Meninga have also stated their desire to return to NRL coaching.
Penrith assistant coach Steve Georgallis has also been touted as a possible successor, but it is believed the club will go for someone with previous NRL head coaching experience.
Brown said last week he had not been approached by the Panthers but was keen to return to the NRL, after being replaced by Wayne Bennett at St George Illawarra at the end of the 2008 season.
But Leary says no decision has been made on any new coaching appointments yet.
"As soon as we come to that decision of who will be our coach we will release it immediately," he said.
"There will undoubtedly be a number of interested people that will apply for the job and it will also be something that we will have to be very serious and make sure that we make a good decision."
The Panthers' efforts this season have fallen well below expectations after the finished the 2010 regular season just below minor premiers St George Illawarra.
They bowed out of last year's finals series with back-to-back losses as injuries to key players cruelled their premiership hopes, but they have struggled mightily this year - giving up in excess of 40 points in their first two home games.
Their only wins of 2011 have been against Canberra and Parramatta, who themselves are struggling in the bottom half of the ladder.
Under Elliott, the Panthers have made the finals only once (in 2010), having finished with the wooden spoon in his first year at the club in 2007, before slowly climbing the ladder to finish 12th and 11th in 2008 and 2009 respectively.
Prior to arriving at Penrith, Elliott had mixed success at Canberra - finishing in the top eight in four of his five seasons with the Raiders but failing to win any finals games with the club.

With his speed, flair and an uncanny knack for scoring tries from anywhere on the field, the young Canterbury full-back is the hottest young player in the NRL.
Eight tries in his last five games have boosted Barba's status as an Origin player of the future and he will have a further chance to showcase his wares when his team meets the Brisbane at Lang Park on Friday night.
Selectors Des Morris, Gene Miles and Alan Smith are set to remain loyal to Melbourne half-back Cooper Cronk to fill the utility job in record-breaking Queensland's squad for Origin I on May 27, but Barba's feats have certainly grabbed attention.
"That's fortunately the depth we've got at the moment going through a golden period," Miles said when asked about Barba's rapid development.
"Things always happen around Origin time, whether it be injuries, suspensions or guys facing charges so you have to keep all your options open.
"He's definitely a player we're watching but Cooper (Cronk) has done a magnificent (utility) job after we were left scratching our heads to find someone to replace Karmichael Hunt."
The consensus is while Barba possesses all the attacking weapons, he still needs more NRL experience to develop the toughness needed for the inferno of Origin football.
Still, he is impressing the right people.
Brisbane's Queensland Origin centre Justin Hodges likes what he sees from Barba and is wary of the 21-year-old ahead of Friday's NRL clash.
"He's playing some great footy," said Hodges.
"He reminds you a bit of Matty Bowen who could come on late in the second half (of an Origin) and sting you around the ruck."
Hodges noted Barba was playing a similar attacking style to the game's best, Queensland custodian Billy Slater.
"He's not bashing himself up the middle. He's waiting and he knows who to follow these days and it takes a clever full-back to do that," said Hodges.
"That's what makes Billy so great."

After missing the past two matches with a back injury, Orford will line up at half-back for the cellar-dwellers at Canberra Stadium.
The Raiders are without a victory since round one and Canberra coach David Furner acknowledges that the round 8 clash with the Tigers is a must-win.
He said the team would be better for the return of 2008 premiership half-back Orford.
"Matty's experience [is something] we probably need it at this stage ... Matty will be a good inclusion," Furner told reporters.
Young half Sam Williams, who deputised in Orford's absence, drops back to Toyota Cup.
Furner said his team's capitulation after leading 12-0 at half-time in last Sunday's game against Newcastle, when it conceded 22 second-half points, was unacceptable.
"It's not acceptable to play that sort of second half and expect to win," Furner said.

Quinn, along with fellow winger Matt Duffie and star full-back Billy Slater were in Bellamy's firing line after Melbourne's uncharacteristically sloppy first half, which led to its 18-14 shock loss to the Warriors on Anzac Day.
It was the Storm's first loss at home since round 14 last year, and their second for the season, slipping from first to third on the NRL table.
Duffie and Quinn failed to defuse bombs that led to the Warriors' first two tries.
"Our guys had a fair grab on both of those and in hindsight I think they should have been caught," Bellamy said.
"That happens sometimes but I think they got pretty clean catches to them and put them down so there's 12 points."
Bellamy has given his players a second chance, retaining the same line-up for Saturday night's clash with the Knights, also at AAMI Park.
Quinn, who joined Melbourne in 2007 from the Knights, knows he must do better.
The 28-year-old, who spent most of the past two seasons on the sidelines with some serious injuries, says he has never faced as much competition for starting spots in the Storm backline.
He has been keeping Justin O'Neill down in the reserves, however there are others in the race, with boom rookie Elijah Niko warming up with the side before the Warriors clash as 18th man.
"There's also Sisa Waqa, who's also been playing well in the reggies (reserves)," said Quinn of the giant Fijian.
"There's definitely a healthy competition there in the outside backs, it just makes everyone work a little bit harder.
"It keeps everyone on their toes."
Quinn was not able to pinpoint the reason for Melbourne's off-key performance but said it would be quickly put aside with only a five-day turnaround before facing the Knights, who upset the Raiders in Canberra.
"There's no explanation for the dropped balls ... we had butter on our fingers and they slipped through.
"We'll review the match and look at the good and bad things and then we'll go into the Knights game with a clean slate."

Smith was issued with a $550 infringement notice overnight.
In a statement released by the club, the Sharks said the matter would be dealt with internally before a final report will be referred to the NRL early this week.
"Smith has not been charged by police and there is no allegation of anti-social conduct outside of this matter," the statement read.
Smith has been playing for Cronulla's reserve grade outfit in the NSW Cup, but could be in line for a call-up to coach Shane Flanagan's first-grade squad following a leg injury to five-eighth Albert Kelly.
Kelly faces a long stint on the sidelines after suffering a broken leg in the Sharks' 30-12 loss to North Queensland on Saturday night, with Smith a potential replacement ahead of next round's clash with South Sydney.
Off-field troubles have dogged 26-year-old Smith throughout his career, dating back to his time at Parramatta where he attended a rehabilitation clinic after several drunken episodes.

A Perfectly Sweet Ending for the Tigers in the Sugar Bowl On January 3, 2005the New Orleans Superdome provided the setting for a chance at perfection for the Southeastern Conference Champion Auburn Tigers. The Tigers outlasted a tough Virginia Tech team 16-13 to secure their place in history as one of the greatest Auburn teams of all time and finish their season without a blemish: 13-0. Coming into the battle against the ACC Champion Virginia Tech Hokies, the Tigers knew that national title hopes were slim, but were intent on proving that they were as good as any team in the nation. Auburn roared to a fast start, then settled into a comfortable 9-0 halftime lead. MVP Jason Campbell connected on a 53-yard pass and then a quick five-yard touchdown to increase the lead to 16-0. Virginia Tech threatened to spoil perfection with two fourth quarter touchdowns and cut Auburns lead to 3. However, Auburn was intent to finish their perfect season and hold on to the end. The Hokies could not recover an onside kick and Auburn ran out the clock making them the 2005 Sugar Bowl Champions and simply perfect. Shackleton bagged his first four-pointer since 2009 with 37 seconds remaining, grounding the scraps of a Daniel Mortimer kick to give the fast-finishing Eels a victory that had looked unlikely in a match the Titans led from the eighth minute.
But it was the Eels - minus suspended superstar Jarryd Hayne - who refused to give up, posting their third win for the season and leaving the Gold Coast struggling with just two wins from seven in 2011.
It was Shackleton's first try for the Eels, who he joined last year before missing virtually the entire season when he ripped his hamstring from the bone in round one.
"It's the hardest I've seen someone work coming back from an injury like that," Hindmarsh said.
"By himself, day in, day out, just doing what he needed to do to get on the field and I haven't seen someone that dedicated for a long, long time to get back on the field."
Hindmarsh said there was no doubt Shackleton would celebrate his try.
"We'll hear about it, don't worry," he said.
"It'll be on replay somewhere."
The red-headed former Rooster agreed with his skipper's assessment that the comeback had been tough going.
"You had ups and downs," Shackleton said.
"I improved a lot in the early weeks so I felt good about that.
"Then you have your dark weeks where you're sort of plateauing a bit.
"It's still a work in progress, I'm not exactly where I want to be yet."
Parramatta scored the final two tries after the momentum shifted its way when Titans centre Bodene Thompson was penalised for moving off the mark while playing the ball in his own territory.
Forward Mark Minichiello then infuriated coach John Cartwright attempting a miracle offload on his own 40-metre line with the Titans leading 18-16 and less than three minutes on the clock.
Cartwright said his side should have closed out the match.
"A hundred times over," he said.
"And full credit to Parramatta, they kept coming and they kept themselves in the game but that was inept from us.
"We just shouldn't have been in those positions."
Eels: 22 (J Loko, J Reddy, J Robson, S Shackleton tries; L Burt 3 goals)
Titans: 18 (G Bird, S Michaels, W Zillman tries; S Prince 3 goals)

In small-town Texas, high school football is a religion. The head coach is deified, as long as the team is winning and 17-year-old schoolboys carry the hopes of an entire community onto the gridiron every Friday night. In his 35th year as head coach, Bud Kilmer (Jon Voight) is trying to lead his West Canaan Coyotes to their 23rd division title. When star quarterback Lance Harbor (Paul Walker) suffers an injury, the Coyotes are forced to regroup under the questionable leadership of John Moxon (James Van Der Beek), a second-string quarterback with a slightly irreverent approach to the game. "Varsity Blues" explores our obsession with sports and how teenage athletes respond to the extraordinary pressures places on them.Price: $12.98

Canberra's season now hangs by a thread despite leading 12-0 at half-time on the back of tries to Bronson Harrison and Joel Thompson and a fantastic defensive performance.
But it all fell to pieces for the hosts as early the 43rd minute when James McManus crossed out wide for the visitors.
Canberra captain Alan Tongue let slip a gilt-edged chance for the Raiders to get back some breathing room when he dropped the ball with the try line begging.
Blues Origin hopeful Akuila Uate made him and the Raiders pay by levelling the scores at 12-12 with 14 minutes left before grabbing a second just seven minutes later after Canberra failed to deal with a Wes Naiqama grubber.
By this stage the Raiders were hitting the self-destruct button and Newcastle full-back Shannon McDonnell ended any chance of a last-gasp Canberra victory with a 50m try with just two minutes left.
It was a second-straight win for the Knights, who have now won four of their seven matches, and just their third win in the nation's capitals from 16 attempts.
Tongue was only on the field for three minutes when he made his costly error and said his side probably would have gone on and won if he had scored.
"It was a bit disappointing for me, I had the chance to win the game of footy. If I catch that ball I'm under the posts and we're up by 12 points again and we run away with the game," he told Grandstand.
The inspirational skipper said his side continues to be let down by ill-discipline and not putting in a total 80-minute performance.
"It was a good start for us, that was one of the things we spoke about - we haven't had good starts over the last month of footy," he said.
"We played some good footy, had a good lead at half-time, but that little 10 minute period after half-time is something we have to look at.
"We didn't come out with enough spark, there was all the talk in the sheds, we were raring to go but didn't produce points."
"We just have to keep fighting and working hard."
The Raiders' plight was not helped when referee Matt Cecchin called back Canberra half-back Josh McCrone whilst on his way to the tryline after ruling he had touched a lost ball by Junior Sa'u.
Replays showed Cecchin was wrong and the decision proved costly as the Raiders looked to nip the Knights's comeback in the bud.
Newcastle half-back Jarrod Mullen said a bit more energy after half-time and a lot of faith helped the Knights back in the game.
"We got held up three times in the first half, and that rarely happens. We knew our luck was going to turn around we just had to complete our sets and it happened in the end, so it was a great win," he said.
"It's a cliche, but all our forwards went forward today and against a pack like Canberra, who has one of the best packs in the comp, it was a great effort."

Burgess left the field in the 63rd minute with the Rabbitohs in the midst of a Chris Sandow-inspired comeback at the Olympic stadium and club medico Errol Alcott confirmed the Englishman had suffered a syndesmosis-type injury to his left ankle.
"It's potentially pretty serious ... the worst case is it's a syndesmosis injury (which) often requires surgery, a screw (and would sideline him for) four months," Alcott explained.
"But at the moment we're calling it a syndesmosis-type injury, it doesn't in any way mean the ligaments are actually damaged."
Burgess is likely to go for scans on Monday, where South Sydney fans will be hoping it is just a serious ankle injury, and allow him to return in just over a month.
Souths trailed by just two points at the time, but conceded a try to Aiden Tolman in the subsequent set after Burgess' injury which extended the Bulldogs' lead to eight points and killed off a game in which full-back Ben Barba dominated.
Barba's remarkable day started at 5:00am when he welcomed his second child, Bronte, to partner Ainslie Currie.
Barba then went home and managed four hours sleep while he looked after his other girl, Bodhi, before taking the Rabbitohs apart.
"It's all a blur at the moment," Barba said after the game.
"It's been a long day, I can't wait to go home now and see them and hopefully have a quiet night's sleep.
"I'm still just over the moon."
The 21-year-old celebrated the first of two tries with a salute to his new-born girl and followed it up by setting up tries to Michael Ennis and Steve Turner before icing the game in the 76th minute with a brilliant 40 metre effort where he outran Sandow.
If not for Barba, it would have been Sandow's night.
The diminutive half-back scored a try, kicked a 40/20 and booted sideline conversions as the Rabbitohs clawed their way back from 20-6 down to 20-18 before the Burgess injury drastically halted their momentum.
It was an impressive performance from Sandow, who is reportedly considering an $800,000, three-year offer from Parramatta.
"I thought Chrissy played really well," South Sydney coach John Lang said.
"(But) we're just not consistent enough, we're not playing the 80 minutes."
Bulldogs coach Kevin Moore was impressed with his side's ability to respond after Souths drew within two points - but admonished the team for allowing Nathan Merritt to score in the 80th minute.
"When we were put under the pump, we responded," he said.
"I think it shows there's a fair bit of belief in the side and we got through the simple things."
Burgess was not the only player to finish with an injury.
Debutant full-back James Roberts left the game with a suspected fractured forearm, while in the first half Bulldogs forward Michael Hodgson fainted moments after taking the field and was helped to the sheds, where he stayed for the rest of the match.

Thurston was at his scintillating best as he toyed with the Sharks, his sublime kicking and passing game setting up three of the Cowboys' five tries in their first win in Sharks territory since 2004.
On the back of Darren Lockyer's masterful display for Brisbane on Friday night, Thurston's performance would have put a smile on the face of watching Queensland coach Mal Meninga - New South Wales mentor Ricky Stuart no doubt wondering just what he has got himself into.
But it is Shane Flanagan, Stuart's successor at the Sharks, who has more immediate problems, with key attacking duo Nathan Gardner (ankle ligaments) and Albert Kelly (suspected broken leg) both failing to see out the half as Cronulla slipped to a fourth straight loss.
While it is doubtful whether the efforts of those two combined could have matched Thurston's output, the Sharks were never seriously in the hunt after Gardner limped from the field less than five minutes into the game.
"At stages in that second half, I was looking around wondering where we were going to score points with those two off the field," Flanagan said.
"They're important parts of our team, especially in our attacking game, but I still thought for 30 minutes of the game we were in the arm wrestle, and JT, his class came in there.
"His kicking game stood ours up and showed how poor ours was."
Having held firm in the face of an early 4-0 penalty count, the Cowboys were eventually given a sniff when Matthew Wright - deputising at full-back for Gardner - spilled a tough bomb on his own line.
Gavin Cooper crossed for the first of his two tries in his 100th NRL game soon after and with Kelly not returning after the break, Thurston set up tries for Kalifa Faifai Loa and Cooper around an Ashley Graham four-pointer.
It handed the Cowboys a commanding 26-0 lead before Luke Douglas and Paul Gallen gave the small crowd of 7,340 something to cheer with a pair of tries.
"That's probably our best performance - a high completion rate and I think for a good 70 minutes of that game defensively we were excellent," Cowboys coach Neil Henry said.
"It's no secret our second halves haven't been great but I thought the first 20 minutes of that second half was excellent."
While some changes will be forced on him by injury, Flanagan indicated that would not be the end of the turnover after four straight losses.
Sharks doctor Dave Givney was hopeful of having Gardner back within a fortnight, but he expects Kelly to be out for six to eight weeks with a suspected break below the knee.
"We probably need a bit of a freshen up and we're going to get one because of a little bit of injury and a bit of lack of form," Flanagan said.
"We need to win on Friday night, it's a big game against Souths.
"There will be some changes."

Newcastle will welcome back second rower Corey Patterson from suspension for the game.
Mr Stone says the team is concentrating on improving, not on past performances.
"I don't think it means anything on Sunday when you've got to play 80 minutes," he said.
"The field is still the same. They've got 17 and we have as well.
"Canberra's always been a tough trip for us. We're steeling ourselves for a real resiliant performance and all we can do is make sure we're ready to play and we show the same sort of resilence that we've showed in most of our games so far."

Panthers coach Matt Elliott admitted the six-point difference at Brookvale Oval flattered his side and lamented Penrith's inability to convert pressure into points after it dominated possession in Manly's red zone in the first half.
And feisty five-eighth Burns was frank when assessing Penrith's position after seven rounds.
"When you're two (wins) from seven, the losses are even tougher," he said.
"It's the errors that are killing us, we're making fundamental errors you know what I mean?
"Forward passes, dropped ball, penalties on the fourth tackle ... we've got the lot and it's not up to NRL standard.
"Last year we scored the most points of anyone in the NRL, but right now we're struggling.
"We need to have a good hard look at ourselves ... I think if we're honest with each other we can turn our season around.
"We're all down. We're all hurting. We've got to turn our season around and it's got to start this week (against the Warriors)."
Half-back Walsh admitted that after dominating possession in the opening 20 minutes, Penrith deserved to be on the scoreboard and was at a loss to explain how the Panthers did not cross the line.
Elliott said Manly's defence deserved praise, but Walsh put the blame squarely on the faltering Panthers.
"It was a bit of their defence, but I think it was more us not taking the opportunities that were in front of us," he said.
"Especially in those 15-20 minutes when we had all that possession and couldn't break them ... so... I don't know, it's just not clicking at the moment.
"We know what we can do in attack, we're just not doing it enough at the moment.
"We've got strike power out wide, we're just not using them. We're playing dumb footy."
Walsh agreed with his halves partner that as a group Penrith required an honesty session to turn its season around.
"I'd say so, he's spot on there," he admitted.
"We have to turn it around straight away against the Warriors. We have to. We're in that situation now and we put ourselves in that situation, so we've got to dig ourselves out of it."
Burns felt the Panthers had been improving in recent weeks, and said a quick turnaround was not out of the question.
"We can score points. We put 36 points on (Canberra) a couple of weeks back," he said.
"I thought we were unlucky (to lose 25-10 to Melbourne) last week and I thought the scoreline flattered Melbourne a bit, but we know we're a good team."

After an indifferent start to the season that has seen them win just twice in the first six rounds, the Eels have a chance to turn their season around with a victory against a Titans outfit that has also taken time to get going in 2011.
The Eels could drop to last place by the end of the round with a loss, and a Canberra victory over Newcastle, and Mannah insists the time to start turning hard work into results has to come soon.
"As a playing group we've got a group that is really committed to the cause and we don't want to settle for mediocrity," Mannah said.
"So we're going to make sure we get past these hiccups and get our confidence back and move forward. It's important that we don't let these last few weeks stop us from getting where we want to be at the end of the year."
But they will have to do it without star full-back Jarryd Hayne, who is sidelined for the next two weeks after being suspended for a headbutt on Bulldogs' forward Corey Payne.
Mannah believes the Eels have been spoiled by Hayne's presence for so long, and his absence could bring out the best in some team-mates.
"As a group I think it's going to be good for us to mature a bit," he said.
"I think we've been spoiled having Jarryd at the back ... and we've looked to him a lot when things get tough and put a lot of pressure on him.
"It's going to be good for us to understand now that he's not going to be there on the field and ... just try to force other people to put their hand up and want to be the person that steps up."
Throughout this season, Mannah has been the one to step up for the Eels as he emerges as their forward leader - but he was more excited about the prospect of going head to head with Titans' co-captain Luke Bailey in the veteran's 200th NRL match.
"He's in the best form I've seen him in for a long time," Mannah explained.
"I've got a lot of respect for Bailey, he's been around since I was a kid ... I remember looking up to him for a long time. I still got a bit of a thrill and a buzz when I play against players like him who I looked up to as a kid, and it will be no different when I play this week."
