Mason steams as Rabbitohs roll Knights

Updated July 08, 2012 17:41:18

A frustrated Willie Mason blasted his team-mates for their ill-discipline and errors as an in-form South Sydney outfit carved up Newcastle 34-14 at the Olympic stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Rabbitohs moved into fourth spot on the ladder with their 10th win of the season, a six-tries-to-three attacking masterclass that was built on the back of a 22-10 half-time advantage.

Mason told Grandstand that while the inexperienced Knights gave it a good shot, they gifted Souths with far too many chances to score - chances that the Bunnies took with gusto.

"We've got a young side, inexperienced, and we were in it at the end there with 20 minutes to go," he said.

"But a couple of tries, ill discipline, dropping balls ... you can't give a side like that the opportunity because they're probably one of the best attacking sides in the comp."

South Sydney rookie Adam Reynolds continued to show why he could be the man to steer the Rabbitohs back to the finals after engineering the victory a year after being denied a finals berth by the Knights in round 26.

Reynolds was at the heart of most attacking raids, his short kicking game leading directly to two tries while a third try assist was butchered when Luke Burgess dropped a pass with the line wide open.

Dropped New South Wales winger Akuila Uate scored a double for the Knights, but he would have been disappointed with his afternoon's work.

With his side trailing by three converted tries midway through the second period, Uate virtually sealed his side's fate when he was stripped cold of the ball by Chris McQueen after cleaning up an innocuous grubber in his in-goal.

His day at least ended better than that of team-mate Kyle O'Donnell, the younger brother of former Test back-rower Luke O'Donnell having his debut stopped after just nine minutes thanks to a legal but vicious Sam Burgess shoulder charge.

The Bunnies did not take long to take control, Reynolds' kicking game and some crisp passing up the middle of the ruck leaving the Knights' defence backpedalling.

Dylan Farrell scored after just seven minutes thanks to a Dave Taylor flick pass, before John Sutton and Andrew Everingham sandwiched tries off Reynolds kicks around Uate's first four-pointer.

Mason said poor defence was Newcastle's biggest enemy on the afternoon.

"Our wrestle was awful," he admitted.

"They just kept finding the front. We didn't find the ascendancy in the ruck, they were just getting on their front, they were running from dummy half, flick passes out their arse, just everything.

"It was frustrating to play because our effort is there but we just couldn't get it."

Both sides scored again to give the Rabbitohs a 22-10 lead at the break before a neat short side play when a deep backline was set out to the left resulted in Nathan Peats going over virtually untouched down the right edge.

The Knights had put together back-to-back wins before arriving at Homebush on Sunday, an effort that made Mason think Wayne Bennett's men could beat the Bunnies.

"I did, and we did, we've had a great two weeks and we've come down here to win the game," he said.

"It was just disappointing that we went out like this.

"So [it's] back on the bus, back to think about next week straight away."

Rabbitohs: 34 (D Farrell, J Sutton, A Everingham, I Luke, N Peats, C McQueen tries; A Reynolds 5/6 conversions)

Knights: 14 (A Uate 2, C Houston tries; T Roberts 1/3 conversions)

Mason set to face Panthers

Updated April 24, 2012 17:52:25

Willie Mason says he has not dwelled on Wests Tigers' decision not to sign him and the former New South Wales and Test forward insists he can help turn around Newcastle's indifferent start to the NRL season.

Mason, who has signed with the Knights until the end of the season, was named on the bench by coach Wayne Bennett for Monday's clash with Penrith in what will be his first NRL match since 2010.

The 32-year-old has spent time playing rugby in France following a six-game Super League stint with Hull KR, and last played in Australia for North Queensland.

Mason almost joined the Tigers earlier this month, only for the joint venture to get cold feet at the prospect of signing the controversial star, allowing Bennett to sign him.

"There was a few mixed emotions when I heard the Tigers thing wasn't going to happen," Mason said.

"They're a great club and Tim Sheens is a great coach and a good man.

"I wasn't over the moon. I was in the best state of my life, but I believe things happen for a reason.

"I was disheartened for about 10 seconds, I don't dwell on things too much.

"About a week later I got a call from Wayne and I was stoked."

Mason played 60 minutes in a NSW Cup game for the Knights last weekend, and feels he has still got something to offer in the NRL.

And the former Canterbury and Sydney Roosters star is not concerned about his critics.

"I don't really care what a lot of people say," he said.

"It's about proving it to Wayne, my team-mates, my family and myself. Not anyone else.

"I've got the ability to play at the highest level, I've done it before and I am quietly confident I can do it again."

Manly welcome back Glenn and Brett Stewart for their grudge match against former coach Des Hasler's Canterbury, with Kieran Foran also back from a hamstring injury for the premiers' clash with the Bulldogs at the Olympic stadium.

South Sydney coach Michael Maguire says he will give Nathan Merritt until the last minute to prove his fitness ahead of Saturday's clash with the Cowboys.

Merritt has not played this season due to a foot injury, but is named on an extended bench.

Canberra will once again have the services of tackling machine Shaun Fensom for its encounter with in-form Cronulla on Sunday.

Fensom tore his bicep in the round three clash with Sydney Roosters, but has passed a fitness test and returns.

Young hooker Nathan McIlwrick could make his debut off an extended bench in favour of Travis Waddell.

Mason set for Twickenham debut

Posted May 24, 2011 21:14:00

Rugby league convert Willie Mason is set to make his rugby union debut playing for the Barbarians against England at Twickenham on Sunday.

The 31-year-old forward made six appearances for Hull KR in England before his failure to obtain a Tongan passport led to him being de-registered.

He has since agreed to join big-spending French club Toulon for the 2011/12 season.

Mason switches to rugby union

Updated May 23, 2011 06:12:00

Controversial rugby league star Willie Mason switched codes on Sunday after signing a one-year contract with big-spending French rugby club Toulon.

The 31-year-old - who can play at centre or in the back row - had been sacked by his Super League club Hull KR on Saturday just three months into his three year contract after it learnt he had been to Toulon to meet with the club's directors.

Toulon has become known as one of European rugby union's biggest-spending clubs and currently have the likes of England great Jonny Wilkinson and troublesome Wales international centre Gavin Henson in their squad.

The club has been reported to have offered Mason 395,000 euros ($531,000) per year and club president Mourad Boudjellal said they had offered him a year's extension to his contract should he make 15 starts next season.

The former Canterbury, Sydney Roosters and North Queensland NRL player will reportedly play for the Barbarians against England at Twickenham next Sunday and then again against Wales on June 4.

"I'm just so excited to be playing rugby and I'm looking forward to the challenge," Mason told the Sun Herald on Sunday.

"I've certainly jumped in the deep end in agreeing to play for the Barbarians without having any rugby experience.

"If you ask all the boys, I've always told them I've wanted to have a crack at rugby and I've always been the type to jump in at the deep end, and I'm ready to try the best I can to make an instant switch."

Mason has been involved in controversial incidents throughout his career.

These include testing positive for a recreational drug in 2003, being banned for one match after knocking out Great Britain forward Stuart Fielden during a Tri-Nations match in Sydney in 2006 and receiving a fine for urinating in a public place in 2009.

He is the 11th new signing by Toulon, which has had a disappointing season in failing to reach the Top 14 title play-offs.

Its most high profile acquisitions have been Wallabies back Matt Giteau, Springbok World Cup winning lock Bakkies Botha and exciting French international back Alexis Palisson.

Hull cuts ties with Mason

Posted May 22, 2011 00:09:00

Hull KR have released controversial forward Willie Mason just six months into his three-year contract.

The 31-year-old was de-registered a month ago after he was unable to obtain a Tongan passport that would have enabled him to come off by the Super League club's overseas quota.

Mason, who signed a two-year deal with an additional 12-month option, has made just six appearances for Rovers, who have now decided to cut their losses after losing patience with the wayward star.

Mason has been in dispute with the club since it was revealed he travelled to France to meet officials of Toulon Rugby Union club last month.

Mason de-registered by Hull

Posted April 22, 2011 07:29:00

Australian forward Willie Mason was de-registered by Super League club Hull KR on Thursday amid claims that he could be on the verge of a move into French rugby union.

Rovers had insisted the 31-year-old remained part of their plans despite his continuing inability to gain exemption from the club's overseas quota.

But despite initially being named in Rovers' 19-man squad for Friday's derby against Hull, Mason was withdrawn on Thursday and replaced by Australian scrum half Michael Dobson following his recovery from injury.

Dobson was de-registered on March 10, shortly after undergoing ankle surgery, to make room on the overseas quota for Mason, who had hoped to by-pass the regulations by gaining a Tongan passport.

Toulon are said to be interested in signing Mason, who was last week spotted having talks with the French club's wealthy president Mourad Boudjellal.

It is thought Toulon want Mason to follow in the footsteps of his former Canterbury Bulldogs team-mate Sonny Bill Williams and play inside centre, having transformed the New Zealander from a rugby league forward to a powerful union three-quarter.

England fly-half Jonny Wilkinson and Wales centre Gavin Henson are currently with Toulon and the ambitious club have already recruited Springboks forward Bakkies Botha and Wallabies utility back Matt Giteau for next season.

Mason has considered a switch of codes in the past, having spoken to the Waratahs in 2007 and also visited Japan in 2009 to talk with rugby union clubs.

Mason, who signed a two-year contract with an option for a third season at Craven Park, made an impressive Super League debut against Crusaders six weeks ago but has made little impact since.

A statement from Rugby League officials confirmed: "The RFL can confirm that Hull Kingston Rovers have re-registered Australian scrum-half Michael Dobson and that the player is eligible for selection for the Engage Super League Round 11 fixture at Hull FC on Friday, April 22.

"Hull Kingston Rovers have also de-registered prop Willie Mason following a protracted delay in the player obtaining a Tongan passport.

"Any application to re-register Willie Mason, subject to the player obtaining a Tongan passport, would require the full support of the RFL board of directors."
