Broncos find winning form

Broncos find winning form

Brisbane snapped a three-match losing run with a see-sawing 50-24 win over Newcastle at Lang Park.

The Broncos raced out to a 24-0 lead after almost as many minutes, but the Knights rebounded with three tries to trail 26-18 at half-time.

The visitors edged to within two points midway through the second half when Richie Fa'aoso crossed for a converted try.

But the Broncos responded with four unanswered tries through captain Sam Thaiday, Justin Hodges, Andrew McCullough and Josh Hoffman to seal the win.

The Broncos hold an 8-4 record to sit in second place behind Melbourne on 18 points.

The defeat leaves the Knights struggling on 10 points in 13th position with a 4-8 return from their 12 starts.

Thaiday admitted the Broncos were often their own worst enemy against the Knights.

"We made it very hard and we gave them a lot of penalties coming out of their end and we handed over a little bit of ball there," he told Grandstand.

"We let them back in the game, we should have kept the foot down and gone on with what we were doing there.

"So a little bit disappointed in letting in that many points, but we showed that if we could hang in there we could score some points on them."

The first 40 minutes could only be described as bizarre, Brisbane rushing on 24 straight points from four converted tries before the Knights replied with 18 points in a row from three converted tries of their own.

After winger Gerard Beale (fourth minute), centre Jack Reed (14th), Hodges (18th) and Dale Copley (21st) crossed in the space of 17 minutes, things were looking ugly for Knights coach Wayne Bennett.

But without warning, the match turned on its head.

The Knights suddenly switched on, piling on 18 points of their own with veteran hooker Danny Buderus scoring twice (27th and 35th minutes) and late inclusion Wes Naiqama getting across the line in the 32nd minute.

The Knights appeared to have levelled on the scoreboard when five-eighth Jarrod Mullen sprinted 80 metres to touch down under the posts.

But video referee Bernard Sutton correctly ruled Mullen was offside when he picked up the ball after it hit his leg and also rebounded off team-mate Chris Houston.

Newcastle full-back Darius Boyd, who had not scored in 11 match this season, crossed the line in the 50th minute but lost the ball in Peter Wallace's last-ditch tackle.

Fa'aoso try and the ensuring conversion from Naiqama saw the Knights trial 26-24 before the Broncos moved cleared with four tries to close out the match.

Broncos: 50 (Hodges (2), Beale, Reed, Copley, Thaiday, McCullough, Hoffman tries; C Parker 7 cons, Wallace con; Parker pen)

Knights: 24 (D Buderus (2), W Naiqama, R Fa'aoso tries; W Naiqama 4 cons)

Maroons out to give Civoniceva a winning farewell

Luke Pentony

Updated May 16, 2012 13:08:13

A year after farewelling Darren Lockyer on a winning note, Queensland Origin players are determined to send out Petero Civoniceva in similar fashion.

Civoniceva made his debut for the Maroons when they defeated the Blues 2-1 in 2001 and he has been one of the pillars in the front row ever since in 30 appearances for his state.

His front row partner Mark Scott says he is honoured to be packing down with Civoniceva in his final series, highlighting the influence the 36-year-old has had on some of the younger members of the Maroons squad.

"I'm really glad he is going around again, it's great to be in camp with him," he said.

"He has a massive impact on a lot of the young forwards coming through the Queensland side, so it will be great to play with him again."

Full-back Billy Slater said Civoniceva deserves a fitting farewell.

"He's been a great warrior for Queensland for a long time and he's a great advertisement for our game," Slater said.

"He's a great bloke on and off the field. He would deserve a fitting farewell like Darren did last year but we have to make sure we all do our jobs to do that."

Scott and Civoniceva will have their work cut out for them with the Blues set to feature captain Paul Gallen and debutant James Tamou as their bookends.

Gallen wrote himself into Origin folklore during the Blues' 18-8 win in game two last year, posting 234 run metres and 32 tackles in a heroic 80-minute effort.

The Cronulla skipper is averaging over 200 run metres per match this NRL season, playing a key role in the Sharks' revival.

Scott is wary of Gallen's impact but he is also mindful of what his Cowboys team-mate Tamou is capable of producing on the attacking side of the ball.

"I think they've got a few forwards there who have a bit of X factor and bring a bit of explosiveness to the side," he said.

"So you get the work with Gal (Gallen) but Jimmy Tamou and Tony Williams coming onto the ball is a pretty daunting task."

Maroons confident of winning without Locky

Luke Pentony

Updated May 15, 2012 14:57:44

The Maroons are confident they have the experience and depth to compensate for the absence of retired great Darren Lockyer in this year's State of Origin series.

Lockyer departed the Origin arena last year when he led Queensland to its sixth straight series win, capping off a remarkable Maroons career that included 36 caps beginning back in 1998.

Johnathan Thurston, Lockyer's long-time partner in the halves for the Maroons, will move to five-eighth with Australia Test half-back Cooper Cronk to start in the number seven jersey against New South Wales in Melbourne on Wednesday week.

Cronk has been a part of the Maroons set-up since 2010, having made six appearances off the interchange bench.

He said the experience of playing Origin on the bench has made him a better player and he is ready for the next step.

"Darren has laid the platform for what has been a successful Queensland team through his time," Cronk said.

"There are a few blokes who now get the opportunity to pick up the baton and run with it."

"There is nothing like starting a game of football for Queensland."

Cronk said that although his combination with Thurston is untested at Origin level he said the friendship the pair have built should assist their on-field understanding.

"Knowing each other's role and knowing each other as people off the field tends to help," Cronk said.

"The Test was an example of how we like to play in the same team together."

The Maroons proved during their streaks of victories that they could win without Lockyer, who was sidelined in the 2008 series due to complications relating to the knee injury he sustained the previous year.

Thurston, Scott Prince and Karmichael Hunt appeared in the halves for the Maroons in their 2-1 series triumph four years ago and lock Ashley Harrison is confident they can win again without Lockyer.

He noted that a player of Lockyer's stature will be missed, but the fact the Maroons possess a host of experienced campaigners meant the squad will not be found wanting in the leadership department.

"Most of the boys have been here before," Harrison said.

"Having Locky not here is going to be a great loss for us, but I'm sure the guys there have done the job before and looking forward to the challenge."

Prop Matthew Scott admitted there was a different feel already amongst the Maroons squad without Lockyer, but he has faith Cameron Smith will lead by example as captain.

"Obviously whenever you lose a player of Locky's calibre there's a bit of a gap there," he said.

"But we're fortunate enough to have Cameron Smith step into that captaincy role and a lot of other guys are leaders in their own clubs, so I'm sure we will be served really well by those guys."

The Maroons leave Brisbane for Melbourne today to begin their pre-Origin camp.
