Slater, Parker in doubt for Origin III

Updated June 14, 2012 13:41:42

Injured fullback Billy Slater says he's desperately hoping to be part of Petero Civoniceva's State of Origin farewell at next month's series decider at Lang Park.

Slater with a knee injury and Corey Parker (lacerated leg) are Queensland's biggest injury concerns following last night's 16-12 loss to New South Wales in Sydney.

Parker has had surgery to a nasty gash on his lower left leg that saw him carried off at the bigging of the second half.

Slater is having scans this afternoon on a possible damaged posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) in his left knee.

"We'll know more after I have a scan this afternoon (Thursday)," said Slater before heading back to Melbourne.

"It was a positive I finished the game, definitely. I've been told it's a PCL injury but what grading or whether it's snapped I'm not sure."

Slater, who felt the injury cut his pace back to 75 per cent, said he'd been told he could keep playing without his PCL.

"I think Justin Hodges is missing a PCL in one of his knees which is positive news for me," Slater said.

"It's a common thing to repair PCLs so hopefully it's just a rehab thing and a matter of getting the strength back."

Slater was put through a fitness test in the dressing room during the half-time break by Queensland team doctor Roy Saunders before being allowed to return to the field.

He said once the injury was properly diagnosed he would begin the process of rebuilding strength in his left knee.

"I'm hoping it's not long, not three weeks anyway," said the electrifying 28-year-old.

"Obviously I want to be there for game three, that's the short term goal. I'd really like to be there for that."

Parker was expected to be released from hospital on Thursday to fly home to Brisbane.

He has told Fox Sports that he's hopeful of recovering in time for the series decider.

"I've been better mate but I had surgery last night and I guess now it's just a matter of mending.'

While team-mates and staff could not look at the gaping wound which went through to the bone, Parker is understood to have asked Dr Saunders while he was being examined on the sideline if he could go back onto the field.

Dr Saunders said late on Wednesday night that the risk of infection was the biggest concern for Parker.

He said while the deep wound would have been cleaned and sterilised, there was always a chance a fragment of dirt or grass could lead to infection.

Because of its location, Parker's wound was not stitched closed to help it heal and to limit the risk of it splitting open again.

Dr Saunders said it was difficult to put a time frame on when Parker would be able to return to the field.

He said his cut was as bad as any he had seen while treating footballers.

Winger Brent Tate (ankle and knee) said he would wait until returning home to Townsville on Thursday to make a call on whether he backed up against Brisbane on Friday night.

"It's a bit sore and it feels a little funny so I'll wait until I see the medical staff at the Cowboys before I make any decision about whether I'll play on Friday night," Tate said.

Brisbane's Origin pair Matt Gillett and Ben Hannant will again back up but veterans Petero Civoniceva, Justin Hodges and Parker will miss the clash.

Family illness puts Scott in Origin doubt

Updated June 05, 2012 09:36:39

Queensland are understood to have plans in place to cover Matt Scott should a family illness prevent him from tackling NSW in State of Origin II.

Scott's mother, Diane, is battling throat cancer and he flew home to Longreach to be with her on the weekend after North Queensland lost to the Gold Coast on Friday night.

Scott and Cowboys teammates Johnathan Thurston and Brent Tate will be named on Tuesday in an unchanged 17-man Queensland squad for Wednesday week's Origin clash in Sydney.

Despite speculation veteran prop Petero Civoniceva could start off the bench in Sydney, the only change is likely to be Brisbane's Corey Parker being named 18th man ahead of Manly halfback Daly Cherry-Evans.

Should unfortunate circumstances force Scott to withdraw from the match, the most likely scenario would be to push first game man-of-the-match Nate Myles into the front row and bring Parker into the pack.

Scott missed the Cowboys' weekend recovery session to spend a few days with his mother who's played a major role in career.

Scott hails from Ilfracombe - a remote town in Queensland's central west which is so isolated it's four hours drive to play a home game or eight hours when your team is on the road.

Every weekend, Scott's mum would drive the team bus, stopping to collect her son's teammates from communities along the way.

Meanwhile, Queensland co-selector Gene Miles said he expected Ricky Stuart's selection of young Penrith prop Tim Grant to give the Blues some punch in Sydney.

"They'll have two young enthusiastic props in (James) Tamou and Grant who'll rip and tear when let loose," Miles said.

"Grant is a lump of a bloke, he'll be like a cat in a fish shop ripping in.

"He's been mentored by big Petero who knows he hits hard and runs hard."

Queensland coach Mal Meninga will get the players' Origin emotions pumping early with the goal to wrap up a seventh straight series against NSW next week.

Meninga and his players will take a charter plane to Origin great Arthur Beetson's home town Roma on Wednesday to meet their fans, with a turnout of up to 5000 expected.

The Queensland players were completely overwhelmed by a similar street parade and fan day when they visited flood ravaged Emerald before winning last year's series.

Hodges in doubt for Manly clash

Updated May 10, 2012 17:34:58

Matt Gillett could get his chance to show Queensland selectors just how versatile he is, with Brisbane centre Justin Hodges in doubt for Friday night's showdown with defending premier Manly.

Broncos coach Anthony Griffin insisted his star centre was likely to play, but the sight of Hodges limping from the training paddock on Thursday morning with a foot injury was not good.

Hodges climbed straight onto the physio table for treatment of a ligament strain below his ankle and the club doctor was called in to give an assessment on his latest injury.

Griffin said Gillett or Ben Te'o would move off the bench into the centres if Hodges was not right.

"It was just a bit uncomfortable for him out there. It's just a little ligament problem and it was a little sore," Griffin said.

"Obviously, we want him out there. But if he's no good, he's no good.

"The one thing you can't do against Manly is take in someone who's half-fit. We won't be doing that."

Manly forward Anthony Watmough greeted the Hodges news with some mirth.

"Hodgo is the best (at) pulling out a day before a game and coming out and having a blinder," he grinned.

"Hodgo has had a few injuries in his career, which is a pretty sad thing, but he always bounces back.

"So hopefully it's not too bad for the poor guy."

Watmough is a fan of Gillett's after getting to know him when he was 18th man for Australia last month.

"I had the pleasure of getting to know Gillett in the Aussie team and he's a great kid," he said.

"He's very talented and he can obviously hit as everyone's seen.

"If he slides in there, or Hodgo's there, he's going to do a good job."

Manly coach Geoff Toovey, who admitted he would not be "shattered" if Brisbane rested Hodges, had some fun when told the Broncos were expecting five-eighth Kieran Foran to make a comeback from injury at Lang Park.

Foran, who has been battling a hamstring injury, was not on the team bus to the airport on Thursday.

"Yeah, it's our cunning plan to smuggle him up there late," he said.

"No, he's out. He was probably close to being ready this week but the medical staff said it was too risky and then he'd be out for another couple of weeks."

Brisbane winger Gerard Beale can expect to be targeted following an off night under the high ball last weekend against the Warriors.

"That's something he has to rectify. He had a bad night last week," Griffin said.

"He was disappointed with his effort last week and he can expect to have to catch a couple tomorrow night."

Cooper in doubt for Bulldogs clash

Updated March 09, 2012 15:18:20

St George Illawarra officials remain confident of having Matt Cooper available for Saturday night's match with Canterbury despite the star centre sitting out the club's final training run on Friday.

Cooper was restricted to a limited fitness session away from the main group on Friday, with the ankle injury he suffered in the closing minutes of the round one win over Newcastle still hampering his movement.

Rookie Nathan Green trained in his place, with fellow replacement candidate Chase Stanley also failing to train on Friday.

Dragons' officials say a final decision will not be made until game day, rating Cooper a 50 per cent chance of taking on the Bulldogs at the Olympic stadium.

Burgess' season remains in doubt

Posted April 26, 2011 12:45:00

South Sydney forward Sam Burgess will miss at least six NRL matches, but the rest of his 2011 season remains in doubt after scans on the star's injured left ankle proved inconclusive.

Burgess, who suffered the injury in Saturday night's 36-24 loss to the Bulldogs, had an MRI scan on Sunday which were unable to fully determine the extent of the damage.

Initial fears indicated Burgess had suffered a syndesmosis injury which would require surgery and a four month stint on the sidelines.

In a release, the Rabbitohs said Burgess will now need an arthroscope on the ankle to tidy the area up enough to establish whether his season is over.

"Sam will miss at least six weeks of football following the arthroscope and this time period will be revised once the total damage to his ankle has been determined," the club said.
