Folau pulls the pin on AFL career

Israel Folau's AFL career is over after the high-profile rugby league convert quit the Greater Western Sydney Giants two seasons into a multi-million dollar, four-year deal.

Folau made the announcement at a press conference on Thursday, saying he did not have the passion to continue a career in AFL.

"I've really enjoyed my experience at the Giants. In the end I think the passion wasn't quite right," Folau said, confirming he told the Giants on Wednesday night after about a month's consideration.

"If I stayed I guess I was kind of cheating myself.

"I had to be honest and move forward.

"I had to be honest with the club and be up front with them, otherwise it wouldn't be fair for these guys to move forward."

The 23-year-old gave no indication as to where his career would go next, not ruling out a return to the NRL or a move to rugby.

"At this stage I've had no discussions with any clubs at all," he said.

"I'm leaving it up to my management.

"I can't confirm anything. My future at the moment is uncertain. I still don't know what to do."

Early reports say Parramatta is in line to swoop for Folau, who could join younger brother John at the Eels under new coach Ricky Stuart.

Folau admitted the lure of State of Origin was always a factor in the future of his career.

"When I first left it was hard to watch," he said.

"Before I made the decision to come across, those were the type of things I was thinking about."

Folau left the Brisbane Broncos in a much-publicised code switch in 2010 after four spectacular seasons in the NRL, representing Queensland in State of Origin and Australia at international level.

Folau's exit from the NRL was written off by many as a publicity stunt to assist GWS's inception into the AFL - the success of which was undoubtedly greater than Folau's on-field production.

Despite his telling size, power and athleticism, Folau averaged just six touches and kicked two goals in his 13 games in 2012.

In stark contrast to fellow convert Karmichael Hunt, Folau struggled to adapt to his new game, as the Giants experimented playing him in defence, up forward and in the ruck.

"He's doing a great job switching from rugby league and coming across and he's been playing well so it wouldn't be that hard," Folau said of his former Broncos team-mate.

"But the decision that I had to make was the one that I wanted to do."

Folau said he was still proud of what he had achieved.

"It was definitely not a mistake," he said.

"I've learnt a lot about the game and myself and I wouldn't change anything."

"Everyone has their different opinions and views on my decisions.

"At the end of the day it's only mine that matters."

"I've enjoyed every game I've been involved in. To be quite honest I didn't think I'd play that many games."

Giants chief executive David Matthews thanked Folau and described him as a "trailblazer" in the game.

Kevin Sheedy maintained Folau would have been a star had he started playing the game from a younger age but still held out hope of an unlikely return.

"Izzy might come back in two years saying 'I haven't got the job done yet'," the veteran coach said.

AFL boss Andrew Demetriou said Folau left the league with its "blessing".

"Our focus is on what Israel feels is right for him as an individual and as a sportsman, and so we support what has been a very tough decision for him," he said in a statement.

By cutting Folau and his lucrative contract loose, the Giants are a strong chance to recruit former Crows forward Kurt Tippett.

Tippett will be available in the AFL's preseason draft after a move from Adelaide to Sydney broke down during the trade period.

Matthew said discussions with Tippett's management will be "re-engaged".

Inglis pulls hat-trick out of Rabbits' win over Sharks

Updated May 08, 2012 09:34:12

Rampaging full-back Greg Inglis sent New South Wales an ominous warning with three tries as South Sydney snapped Cronulla's six-game streak with a 34-28 win on Monday night.

Queensland star Inglis had a superb night out less than three weeks before State of Origin I, scoring twice before the break and once in the second half to seal victory and a top-eight berth for the Rabbitohs.

Rabbitohs coach Michael Maguire warned NRL rivals this is just the start from Inglis.

"That's (the involvement) you want from your full-back and he's working hard at that," he said.

"We've spoken to him about the improvement he's still got in his game so we're looking forward to that too.

"Once Greg found his feet I knew if we got Greg the ball he could so special things which he's done all his career."

Inglis's hot form was not the only bad news for Blues coach Ricky Stuart, with Cronulla skipper Paul Gallen the latest New South Welshman to fall victim to injury when he suffered a second-half knee complaint.

He limped off just before the hour mark and did not return before being booked in for scans early Tuesday morning.

With Kurt Gidley (shoulder), Danny Buderus (Achilles) and Michael Jennings (shoulder) already out of contention, it could be yet another blow for the Blues as they look to stop the Maroons' six-year Origin streak.

Gallen's injury is an equally disappointing result for the Sharks, who had won six straight and surged to third place on the ladder coming into round nine.

They will remain there for now but the absence of their skipper could make life difficult through the representative period with upcoming games against Melbourne and Canterbury.

Souths (5-4, -11) bounced from 12th to seventh, dislodging the Roosters (5-4, -48) from the top half of the competition and pushing St George Illawarra (5-4, -22) into eighth spot.

All three of Inglis's tries were impressive pieces of football, starting in the fourth minute when he used some crafty movements to wrong-foot the Cronulla defence on its own line.

He busted through the Sharks ranks just minutes later but was unlucky to run out of room and team-mates despite giving the home side superb field position.

Inglis' second try was a superb bit of playmaking as he threw a short ball to Eddy Pettybourne and then wrapped around his second-rower to go through a gaping hole in the Sharks' line to touch down.

Inglis waited 35 minutes for his next four-pointer but it was enough to take the competition points for Souths, and when Merritt got over for his second just five minutes later it was all but over.

It was not just on the attacking end that Inglis excelled - he made a pair of try-saving tackles that ultimately kept the Sharks at bay in the encounter that went down to the last restart.

Rabbitohs forward Sam Burgess enjoyed a solid early return to the park from a knee injury that had kept him out for three matches, producing 16 tackles and 16 runs for 128 metres in the win.

"I thought we did enough obviously, but very disappointed for [allowing] the 28 points," Burgess told Fox Sports.

"We'll address that as a group. We've got a lot of improving to do but we've got a bye next week."

He said the knee did not trouble him in the 50-odd minutes he played.

"It feels good, I did a lot of good rehab with the team and our medical staff," he said.

"It feels really good and it's nice to get back out with the team."

Origin five-eighth hopeful Todd Carney did his chances of earning the Blues' number six jersey a world of good as he guided the Sharks around the field with precision, scoring one try of his own and setting up three others.

The 2010 Dally M Medallist put Cronulla on the board himself before Merritt and Inglis pushed the Bunnies back into a lead they maintained even after Jeff Robson burrowed over the stripe at the half-hour mark.

Stewart Mills, Colin Best and Ben Pomeroy all scored for Cronulla in the second half but the deficit was just too great to overcome for Shane Flanagan's men, who own a 6-3 record through nine rounds.

On top of his injury, Gallen could face heat from the judiciary after he was placed on report in the first half for kneeing hulking South Sydney forward Dave Taylor in the head as they both got up after a tackle.

South Sydney: 34 (G Inglis 3, N Merritt 2 tries; A Reynolds 5/5 conversions, 2/2 penalty goals)

Cronulla: 28 (T Carney, J Robson, S Mills, C Best, B Pomeroy tries; T Carney 4/5 conversions)
