Gallen cleared of serious injury

Updated May 08, 2012 12:45:03

Cronulla and New South Wales rugby league captain Paul Gallen has been cleared of a serious knee injury.

Gallen limped off the field during last night's loss to the Rabbitohs.

He felt pain after something clicked inside his knee.

The Sharks skipper had scans this morning on his knee and the results showed no signs of any ligament damage.

"It's a big relief," Gallen said.

"It's just a strained cruciate ligament. I've done it before, so I've just stretched it a little. It's not too bad.

"The worst case scenario is that I'll miss one week."

The club says it will wait to see how he recovers before deciding if he'll miss any game time.

The news will come as a relief for New South Wales Origin coach Ricky Stuart who has already lost injured Knights pair Kurt Gidley and Danny Buderus from the opening Origin match on May 23.

Gallen was also charged with grade one dangerous contact for kneeing Dave Taylor in his side's 34-28 loss to Souths on Monday night.

An early guilty plea will see the New South Wales Origin prop avoid suspension but he would cop a one-match suspension if he fights the charge and loses.

Cronulla coach Shane Flanagan said the club may elect to fight the charge rather than see Gallen collect 75 carry over points.

"It was an accident," Gallen said.

"There was no intent there at all. I'm probably going to miss one week anyway so we'll see what we need to do."

Walsh injury not so serious

Updated May 02, 2012 17:07:43

Luke Walsh is almost certain to miss Penrith's clash with Melbourne on Saturday, but coach Ivan Cleary says the knee injury his half-back sustained against Newcastle is not as bad as first feared.

Walsh was expected to be sidelined for up to six weeks after limping off midway through the Panthers' 34-14 defeat on Monday at Hunter Stadium.

Cleary has named Walsh in his starting line-up for the visit of the Storm, but says he is almost certain not to play.

"It's highly unlikely he'll be fit, especially with the short turnaround from the Monday," Cleary said.

"It's not as bad as first thought which is good news. It's hard to put an exact timeframe on it, but it shouldn't be too long."

Cleary will also assess the fitness of hooker Kevin Kingston who is recovering from a hyper-extended elbow injury, and could be recalled to allow Travis Burns to move from rake to half-back to cover for Walsh.

Kingston has not been named in the side and Cleary says he will not rush the former Parramatta and Cronulla player back too soon if he is not fully fit.

"Kevin is pretty close, but he needs a few tests, but it's something I don't want to risk," he said.

"We'll look around to see who is available and every single player will be considered."

Ennis cleared of serious injury

Posted July 7, 2011 13:23:00

New South Wales hooker Michael Ennis has been cleared of serious injury after being taken to hospital coughing up blood during the State of Origin loss to Queensland.

Scans at a Brisbane hospital show there is no fracture to Ennis's sternum, after Blues' medical officials feared the Canterbury rake had bleeding on the lungs.

There has been no word from the Bulldogs' camp on his availability for Saturday night's clash with Melbourne in Adelaide.

Meanwhile Johnathan Thurston has had scans revealing the Queensland half-back suffered a grade two medial ligament tear after his knee buckled in a sickening collision with team-mate Ashley Harrison.

He is expected to be out for five to six weeks.
