Manly can handle Barba threat: Toovey

Updated September 05, 2012 17:40:47

Manly coach Geoff Toovey has backed his in-form side to keep Dally M Medal winner Ben Barba under control in Friday night's semi-final.

Barba swept the board at the Dally M awards at Sydney's Town Hall on Tuesday night, taking home the main prize, as well as the full-back of the year award and the Provan-Summons Medal.

The 23-year-old also picked up the Peter Frilingos headline moment award and finished the season as the NRL's joint top tryscorer with North Queensland's Ash Graham.

Toovey says he is a huge admirer of Barba but does not expect Brett Stewart to be the last man in defence trying to stop another of the young Queenslander's trademark long-range tries at the Olympic stadium.

"It's a great award, it's a great honour and he's deserved of it," he said.

"You need to be consistent throughout the year to get that award and that's what he's done, so I'm sure we'll see some more Benny Barba magic on Friday.

"But I don't think Brett will be in that situation, I don't think he'll get through, we'll be sweet."

The reigning premiers have won their last six encounters, but the last team to beat them were the Bulldogs in round 20 at Brookvale Oval.

Barba scored the decisive try in his side's 20-12 victory when he darted over from close range, and Toovey says his troops are well versed in his strengths and what they have to do to stop him.

"He had a bit of luck and you make your own luck and he's been making his own luck really well this year," he said.

"He's scored some sensational tries and some long range ones and some ones where he's just been Johnny on the spot like the one against us, but you've got to put yourself in those positions to score those tries.

"We'll just have to tackle him I suppose and stop him from scoring."

Stewart has been in fine form for the Sea Eagles this year and performed strongly for New South Wales after being recalled for the State of Origin series.

And Toovey believes the 27-year-old's big-match experience will be crucial against the newly-crowned minor premiers and that he will not be fazed by the threat of Barba.

"He's a quality player, a representative player and always produces on the big games and that's what he's done over the last five or six years," he said.

"He's a smart footballer and a smart person and he realises that his opposite number has had a great year and deserves the accolades.

"But I don't think he'll let that affect his game and I think you'll see a great performance from him."

Raiders deny Furner under threat

Updated October 27, 2011 08:20:14

Canberra chairman John McIntyre denies coach David Furner has been given an ultimatum to perform or perish, but warns another below-par season will not be tolerated.

Presented with the findings of a review into the club's operations, instigated after a season in which the Raiders only avoided the wooden spoon on points differential, McIntyre rejected claims Furner was under pressure from the board to keep his job.

"I think David gives himself his ultimatum - certainly there's no ultimatum from the board," he told reporters.

"David Furner's always been looked up on as a long term coach.

"I walked down the steps in the back office (at the Raiders headquarters) and I couldn't help but notice the photos of the past coaches - I'm sure David Furner doesn't want to see his photo up there in that gallery at least for another few years."

Despite re-signing with the club through to the end of 2014 earlier this year, Furner's position was thought to be in some jeopardy after his side failed to match expectations in 2011.

After storming into the second week of the finals in 2010, the young Raiders side was expected to challenge for the premiership this season, but instead spent much of the season near the bottom of the ladder.

While he declared there was no pressure on Furner from the board, he admitted they would not stand for another season of under-achievement.

"Certainly it would be very, very hard for the board to tolerate a repetition of this year's unfortunate results," McIntyre said.

The review, undertaken by ex-Newcastle and Parramatta coach Michael Hagan and consultant John Waser, handed down a list of recommendations, the most significant being the appointment of former Hull KR coach Justin Morgan as Furner's new right-hand man.

The Raiders will also establish a high performance unit to be headed up by former Toyota Cup coach David Hamilton, with Andrew Dunemann the new man in charge of the under 20s side.
