Ill Shillington returns to training

Updated May 17, 2012 12:26:16

Prop Dave Shillington has trained with Queensland squad after sitting out Wednesday's session in Melbourne while battling a virus.

And, in further good news for the Maroons ahead of next Wednesday's State of Origin I, centre Justin Hodges has declared his foot injury is no longer an issue after completing a full training session at Melbourne's Xavier College on Wednesday.

The Maroons will shift camp to the beachside town of Torquay on Friday and Saturday before returning to Melbourne base on Sunday.

Shillington handed reins at Raiders

Updated April 19, 2012 13:51:54

David Shillington says the Raiders will learn from the loss of pivotal playmaker and skipper Terry Campese and avoid another disappointing season.

Shillington has been handed the Canberra captaincy for the rest of 2012 after surgery revealed Campese had torn his ACL for the second time in as many seasons.

Shillington, named in the Kangaroos' front row for Friday's Test against New Zealand in Auckland, said he felt for the injury-cursed Campese.

But the 28-year-old is confident the Raiders would not unravel without their five-eighth like last season's 15th placed finish.

"We did struggle without him last year," Shillington told ABC 666 Canberra Breakfast.

"We probably weren't prepared for it. He is a very influential part of the team with his direction and obviously with the game-breaking ability he has."

Shillington admitted he and others were overwhelmed by added responsibilities after Campese's injury last season.

"I know the senior players respect more how much we have to step up in Campo's absence," he said.

"Last year, myself and Bronson Harrison and a couple of other players, we probably got caught up in team issues too much and it probably distracted us from our own games.

"I reckon that might happen a fair bit with players when they are new to leadership roles.

"Like the young halves, I learned a lot out of last year and I think I'm in a lot better stead to handle it this year."

Croker, Shillington to play final Raiders trial

Updated February 17, 2012 20:41:55

Canberra looks set to field a near full-strength line-up in its final NRL trial against Canterbury on Saturday, with Jarrod Croker and David Shillington both recovered from niggling injuries.

The only big name to sit out the match will be front-rower Tom Learoyd-Lahrs, who has been rested as a precaution after injuring his foot in the last trial against Melbourne.

But coach David Furner said Learoyd-Lahrs already had solid game time under his belt, having played a half of the All Stars match last month, and another 30 minutes of the Storm game before he was forced off.

It's a different story for Croker and Shillington, who have yet to earn any trial minutes heading into the Raiders' opening NRL round clash on March 3.

Croker has been given the all-clear from his knee injury, while Shillington's infected elbow is also on the mend.

Furner expects to give his top-tier side a solid workout in the trial at Wagga Wagga and potentially a full 80 minutes for players like five-eighth Terry Campese, halves partner Josh McCrone and star full-back Josh Dugan.

"We're nearly full-strength ... so it will give us a good test," he told reporters in Canberra on Friday.

Furner was impressed with the Raiders' efforts last week, when they won 27-18 over a Storm outfit minus their star trio of Cooper Cronk, Cameron Smith and Billy Slater.

This week, he wants the Raiders to focus on their defence against an attacking Bulldogs squad.

"Canterbury also play a different style of football, so I really want to get our defensive line tested more than we did last week," he said.

"I've asked them to up the ante in defence."

Des Hasler's Bulldogs come into the game on a loss, after falling to the Sydney Roosters 28-16 at Belmore Oval last Sunday, but will also field close to their first-pick side on Saturday, minus captain Michael Ennis.

Trent Hodkinson is set to play his first minutes in 2012 after recovering from off-season knee surgery, while famed international prop James Graham is also likely to get his first start after being named on the bench against the Roosters.

Squad: Glen Buttriss, Shaun Berrigan, Terry Campese, Jarrod Croker, Josh Dugan, Shaun Fensom, Blake Ferguson, Bronson Harrison, Sam Mataora, Josh McCrone, Josh Papalii, Dimitri Pelo, Reece Robinson, Sami Sauiluma, David Shillington, Joel Thompson, Trevor Thurling, Dane Tilse, Travis Waddell, Brett White, Sam Williams.

Shillington out of England clash

Updated November 03, 2011 23:25:21

Australia coach Tim Sheens has named a 19-man squad for Sunday morning's (AEDT) Four Nations match with England at Wembley.

Prop David Shillington has failed to recover from the knee and ankle injuries he sustained in the 26-12 win over New Zealand at Warrington, with Beau Scott, who is included on a six-man bench, likely to take his place.

Greg Inglis returns at left centre after Willie Tonga's sustained a hip and pectoral injury against the Kiwis, with Chris Lawrence shifting to the opposite side.

Robbie Farah is named on the bench for the first time in the tournament.

Sheens says Shillington would have been available for selection had the match been the final, but is confident the decision to rest Inglis for the opening clash at Warrington will be vindicated.

"I think it was a smart move to rest him, he looks in the best shape I have seen him," Sheens said.

However, Sheens admits he is wary about how little match action Inglis has under his belt leading into the encounter, having been sidelined since round 25 of the NRL season two months ago.

"Greg is rated as probably the premier centre in the world," Sheens said.

"But it doesn't matter how good a player you are, you can't beat game play.

"Obviously I hope he'll go well. But it may be a case of getting him to play his way back into the game slowly and build it up. I don't want him to have a shocker."

Australia: Billy Slater, Akuila Uate, Greg Inglis, Chris Lawrence, Darius Boyd, Darren Lockyer (captain), Johnathan Thurston, Paul Gallen, Cameron Smith, Matt Scott, Luke Lewis, Sam Thaiday, Anthony Watmough

Interchange: Cooper Cronk, Keith Galloway, Robbie Farah, Tony Williams, Beau Scott, Corey Parker

Shillington pledges future to Raiders

Updated July 5, 2011 12:08:00

The Canberra Raiders have re-signed injured Queensland forward David Shillington for three years.

Shillington has been sidelined recently because of a pectoral muscle injury.

The new deal will see the 28-year-old prop likely play out his career in Canberra.

The former Roosters player, who will stay in Canberra until the end of 2015, credited the Raiders for his career revival.

"It's been really good here. It's been good for my footy and things are starting to turn around for the Raiders so it's all looking good," Shillington said.

"I'll be 32 when I finish here and hopefully I have a couple more years after that. But we'll wait and see how the body holds up."

Shillington will miss Saturday night's game against Cronulla but expects to return in Round 19 when the Raiders meet Melbourne or a week later against St George-Illawarra.
