New recruit Krisnan Inu was the key factor for the second week running as Canterbury escaped South Sydney in a 23-18 thriller at the Olympic stadium on Saturday night.
After scoring two tries and setting up a third in the Bulldogs' Monday night win over the Roosters, Inu slotted the winning field goal in just his second outing in blue and white after moving from the Warriors two Tuesdays ago.
Full-back Ben Barba deserved just as much credit though as he chased down flying Souths centre Dylan Farrell with under three minutes to go, dragging him down and into touch centimetres before the tryline.
David Stagg then put the game to bed for the Bulldogs, crossing for a try off an Inu inside ball after Josh Morris cleaned up the scraps of a deflected Kris Keating kick.
Canterbury moves up to second on the ladder, ahead of Brisbane, the resurgent Tigers, defending premier Manly and Cronulla with a massive for-and-against advantage, and will remain there until next round.
More to follow.
Canterbury: 23 (K Inu, J Wright, B Barba, D Stagg tries; K Inu 3/4 conversions, 1/1 field goals)
South Sydney: 18 (J Hunt, D Taylor, D Farrell tries; A Reynolds 2/3 conversions, 1/1 conversions)
