Hasler punished over referee spray

Updated August 06, 2012 18:27:58

Canterbury coach Des Hasler has been served a $10,000 breach notice by the NRL for his comments on the standard of refereeing in the Bulldogs' win over Newcastle on Saturday.

The Bulldogs coach blasted the performances of officials Brett Suttor and Jason Robinson in his post-match media conference at Hunter Stadium.

"One thing I couldn't understand was toward the back end of the first half the referees are talking between themselves saying: this game is going to change, this game is going to change, this game is going to change and the next time there's, you know, we get a run of penalties there's four penalties against us," Hasler said.

The NRL said the comments were made only two days after all clubs were warned in relation to attacks on the character of officials and generalisations that attack public confidence.

"Coaches have the ability to be critical of decisions," ARLC general manager of football operations Nathan McGuirk said.

"What we have said is that in doing so they should not question the character or integrity of the officials and that they should not use emotive generalisations.

"In this case it is our view that there was a clear inference drawn by the Bulldogs that the referees had a pre-determined view in the decisions they were to take for the remainder of the half."

The governing body ordered a review of the referees' on-field audio which produced one comment from a match official, which was in relation to the need for all officials to remain alert in the match.

"We just have to remember that Newcastle hasn't had the ball yet, so this could turn around very quickly," Suttor said.

Robinson replied: "Very true."

The Bulldogs have until Tuesday to make submissions in relation to the breach notice.

NRL video referee 'rested'

Updated May 30, 2012 09:15:17

Senior video referee Sean Hampstead has been rested for this weekend's round of NRL matches after two questionable decisions.

Hampstead was the video referee who awarded the controversial try to Queensland's Greg Inglis in last week's State of Origin opener in Melbourne.

He was also involved in another controversial decision in Sunday's game between Penrith and Manly, which resulted in a Panthers try.

The NRL says Hampstead is one of five or six referees to be rested for this weekend's full round of fixtures.

Sheens to meet with Test referee

Updated April 19, 2012 12:43:00

Australian coach Tim Sheens will meet with English referee Richard Silverwood in a bid to get clarification on several rule interpretations ahead of Friday night's Test against New Zealand.

Silverwood will officiate in his fourth straight mid-year Test between the trans-Tasman rivals.

Sheens is wary of his impact on the game, which will be governed by international rules rather than the NRL rules all the players who will take part in the Eden Park clash have become accustomed to.

The most obvious difference between NRL and international games is having one referee instead of two, which can have a profound effect on the latitude given to defenders in the ruck.

But there are also several other rules which differ, such as a tryscorer not being allowed to touch the corner post in an attempt to score - as is now allowed in the NRL.

"The rule interpretations, there's been some changes - there were 13 last year in the Four Nations and I've received 10 so far and there are some amendments there that I'm a bit concerned about," Sheens said on Thursday.

"There's also his interpretation from Super League in England - I just want to be sure where we're at with the interpretations."

Kiwi coach Stephen Kearney said he saw no need to meet with Silverwood, and claimed to have no problem with his Australian counterpart doing so.

Both sides are having their final training run at a sun-drenched Eden Park on Thursday, with Kearney saying his side would run out as selected.

Charges laid over headbutt on referee

Posted April 19, 2011 08:02:00

A man has been charged for allegedly headbutting the referee of an under 12s rugby league game in Sydney over the weekend.

Police say the 18-year-old referee sent an assistant official from the field after being abused at St Andrews, in the city's south-west, on Sunday.

The 23-year-old allegedly confronted the referee after the game and headbutted him.

He has been charged with assault and is expected to appear in court in June.
